To their credit, here is the Fly from the tour where they re-applied to be the best band in the world. They didn’t entirely tone it down.

So maybe I have become a little obsessed with the Zoo TV tour this week. I didn’t realize anything like this had ever been done. The monster stage with TVs, cars hanging, etc. What an insane setup. The satirical characters that Bono played for the tour and some of the music videos. U2 was so serious before, then all of the sudden changed everything, bordering on shock rock.
I’ll be at the 360 show tonight. It is supposed to be one of the best stadium tours ever, but it just isn’t anything like this. I’m certain we won’t see anything like this for a long time, not with the record industry being so controlled. Zoo TV was an interesting intersection of a band being the biggest in the world, and deciding they didn’t want to be anymore. Of course a decade later Bono is quoted as saying ”We’re back, re-applying for the job … And the job is best band in the world.” And they are pretty much viewed that was now, but I think they wouldn’t be if they didn’t push the envelope so much in the nineties.
The wikipedia article on Zoo TV is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo_TV_Tour
I’ll also add that there has only been one other band that was the most popular in the world, and seemed to go off the deep end. Of course Lennon never re-applyed for the job.

In 48 hours I will be either leaving or about to leave the U2 concert here in Raleigh. I’m totally excited. I saw a review from the Chicago show and the reviewer said this 360 tour is 2nd only to the Zoo TV tour. I have a DVD from the Elevation tour, and I have seen both U2 3D and a DVD from the last tour, and I’ve got Rattle and Hum, but I’ve never watched clips from Zoo TV. This stuff is absolutely amazing. The craziness of possibly my favorite U2 record is embellished in the tour setup. Great stuff, enjoy.

Coveting possessions is unhealthy. Here’s how I look at it:
All of the computers on Ebay are mine. In fact, everything on Ebay is already mine. All of those things are just in long term storage that I pay nothing for. Storage is free.
When I want to take something out of storage, I just pay the for the storage costs for that particular thing up to that point, plus a nominal shipping fee, and my things are delivered to me so I can use them. When I am done with them, I return them to storage via Craigslist or Ebay, and I am given a fee as compensation for freeing up the storage facilities resources.
This is also the case with all of my stuff that Amazon and Walmart are holding for me. I have antiques, priceless art, cars, estates, and jewels beyond the dreams of avarice.
The world is my museum, displaying my collections on loan. The James Savages of the world are merely curators.
As I am the curator of their things, and thus together we all share the world.
A fine comment from one Pastabagel on Collect ‘em all! (via Code for Something w/ a fist-bump for Johanna) (via jackcheng)
Love the idea of this. The idea that, even that thing you “need” today may become “good to have” tomorrow and that it is OK to release it to someone that has a need then. The idea that all of this stuff the world produces for our consumption are things we already, in some small way, own – or own us.

Sorry for all of the via mess, but I think credit is due. For good finds. I love this concept, it is a direct way of saying something I have been thinking, but can I do it?

“And Your Bird Can Sing” (Take 2 w/Overdubs)
What I love:
- Without the (albeit insanely amazing) leads from Paul1 and George playing from the top, you get to hear George’s (unused) gorgeous 12-string Rick arpeggios. Jesus, what a boner that gives me. Big Rick boner. LOVE that sound.
- The chatter and clowning.
I’m not a deep Beatles scholar, but I think this (Apr 1966) wasn’t too long before things started to well and truly unravel internally.
I wonder how many times after this John and Paul would have this much fun in the same room at the same time. Makes me kinda weepy actually. Sucks that the two guys responsible for giving the world so much joy ended up enjoying so little of it for themselves.
John calls this one “a throwaway,” but it’s categorically one of my favorite Beatles songs and has to be regarded as one of the quintessential inspirations for every power pop song since.
Final version (stereo):
Fact: Paul was arguably the best guitar player in the band. “The End?” Bunch of that is Paul. Yep. ↩
As with almost everything he writes, the quality of Merlin’s recent posts on the Beatles have been entertaining and informative. I find the footnote on Paul’s guitar skills interesting.
